Java Desktop Edition is for general application development. This is a royalty free development license - you build your application and deploy it wherever you like at no extra cost. Comes with JBuilder demos.

Java Server Edition is for server development. This is NOT a royalty free license - but is a single server license (one license per server). This would be typical for a web server, for example, for jsp development. Comes with JBuilder and jsp demos.
