Ping or TraceRoute times out on Vista

The Ping/TraceRoute/ICMPPort component times out on Windows Vista.

The Ping, TraceRoute, and ICMPPort components that are included in IPWorks use raw sockets, which The Windows Firewall that comes on Windows Vista does not allow through. The result is a timeout error for these components. There are two workarounds for this problem:
  • Use the Windows ICMP.dll to perform the communication. This can be done through the component by setting the UseICMPDll=true config setting on the component.
  • Change the Windows Firewall settings to allow incoming ICMP traffic. To do this, add a new custom inbound rule for protocol type "ICMPv4".
