Windows attempts to visit after Error Verifying Certificate

When we connect using our own certificate the handshake returns 280 Error verifying certificate, why does this sometimes force windows to do a DNS lookup to and then try to connect to it.

If your system has the "root certificate update" feature turned on, it will automatically attempt to contact windows update when presented with an untrusted certificate. You can avoid this by either using a valid certificate, or by turning off the "root certificate update" feature of the system through the Add/Remove Windows Components dialog of Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
